Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart and can help clinicians assess heart rate, rhythm and certain electrical abnormalities.

Cardiac diagnostic tests provide different types of information about how your heart works. When selected by a qualified clinician, these tests can support further assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.
Learn what each test generally involves. The actual procedure and preparation depend on the test prescribed for you.
Small electrodes are placed on the skin to record the heart's electrical signals. The test is usually quick and painless. It may be used when assessing palpitations, chest discomfort or other symptoms.
Heart rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms may be monitored while you exercise on a treadmill or receive medication that simulates the effects of exercise. Follow the specific instructions provided by your clinician.
A sonographer or clinician uses ultrasound to create moving images of the heart. A standard transthoracic echocardiogram is generally non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation.
A small portable monitor records heart rhythm during everyday activities for the prescribed monitoring period. You may be asked to keep a symptom diary and follow instructions about bathing and device care.
Preparation differs by test. Please follow the instructions from your clinician or the diagnostic centre.
Bring your prescription, previous cardiac reports, relevant medical records and a list of medicines.
Ask whether fasting, suitable clothing or any specific preparation is required for your test.
Do not stop prescribed medication unless your clinician specifically instructs you to do so.
Tell your clinician about your symptoms, allergies, medical history and any relevant concerns.
Our goal is to help patients understand the process and know what to expect at each stage of their visit.
